"Mom and Dad weren't exactly crazy about Blythe. Too civilized, they said, and downright unnatural, too, since no town the size of Blythe had any business existing out in the Mojave Desert" (44). Why do her parents feel that way? In what ways were they raised that they don't like civilization?
I think that the parents act like that hate civilization because they are embarrassed that they are poor. I also think they are trying to protect their children from feeling they are not good enough.
What do you think of Jeannette's father? Does he have the traits of what you would consider a good father? Would you behave the same way he does if you were raised like he was?
I think that Jeannette's father has good intentions. He always tells Jeannette that he will never let anything hurt her. When she is afraid he helps her take down the "demon". He also displays good parentship when he makes his kids say "sir", "ma'am", and "thank you".
It seems they have finally settled down in Battle Mountain. Do you think they will stay a while? Or do you think Dad will decide it's unsafe and force the family out of their house once again?
